Level Your Lawn (Lite)

Level Your Lawn (Lite)

Fix low spots and uneven patches without a full renovation. A weekend project with basic tools and materials.

Tools & Materials

  • Bow rake or landscaping rake
  • Shovel & wheelbarrow
  • Topdressing mix (sand + compost/soil)
  • Lawn roller or flat board for leveling
  • Grass seed (optional for overseeding)

Step-by-Step (Lite Leveling)

  • Mow lawn shorter than usual (but not scalped).
  • Mark and remove debris from low spots.
  • Mix topdressing blend: ~70% sand, 30% compost/topsoil.
  • Shovel small amounts into dips and rake smooth.
  • Gently roll or press to settle material into turf.
  • Water lightly to help soil blend with grass base.
  • Repeat over several weeks if spots are deeper than 1".

Aftercare

  • Resume normal mowing height once grass recovers.
  • Overseed bare patches with matching grass type.
  • Avoid heavy traffic until turf fills in.
Tip: For large or severely uneven yards, consider a full lawn renovation. This checklist is for light topdressing only.
