Warm-Season Mowing Heights
Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine thrive in the heat—but only if you cut them at the right height. Here’s how to mow these grasses for health and curb appeal.
Bermuda grass
Height: 0.75–1.5 inches. Bermuda tolerates (and loves) short mowing, especially with reel mowers. Rotary users should stick closer to 1–2 inches. Frequent mowing is essential to prevent scalping.
Zoysia grass
Height: 1–2 inches. Zoysia forms a dense carpet but can get thatchy if cut too high. Keep blades sharp and avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the blade to maintain its soft texture.
St. Augustine grass
Height: 2.5–4 inches. Its wide blades need more height for photosynthesis and drought protection. Cutting too short stresses the stolons and invites weeds, so taller is usually better.
