Mowing Patterns: Change It Up Weekly

Mowing Patterns: Change It Up Weekly

Cutting the same direction week after week leaves ruts and pushes grass to lean. Switching up mowing patterns keeps turf upright and creates a polished look.

Rotate your mowing direction

If you mowed north-south last week, go east-west this week. The change prevents soil compaction along wheel tracks and encourages blades to stand tall instead of leaning.

Diagonal and circular passes

Diagonal patterns disguise imperfections and give lawns a ballpark feel. Around trees or garden beds, use circular passes to reduce trimming work and create smooth flow lines.

When to repeat patterns

Avoid repeating the same pattern more than two weeks in a row. For cool-season grasses, alternating weekly works best. For warm-season grasses that handle tighter cuts, consider three directions over a cycle.

Tip: Patterns are more visible when blades are sharp and mowing height is slightly lower. Combine with a roller kit if you want visible striping.
