Lawn Striping Basics

Lawn Striping Basics

Striping creates the bold, ballpark look by bending grass blades in different directions. It’s easier than it looks—just mow in straight lines and let light do the work.

How striping works

Grass blades bend slightly when cut. Blades bent toward you look dark; blades bent away reflect light and appear lighter. Alternating passes creates the striped effect.

Equipment you’ll need

A standard mower works, but a roller kit or striping attachment enhances the bend for more dramatic results. Even a simple homemade roller (PVC filled with sand) can boost visibility.

Step-by-step striping

Pick a straight line to start—like a driveway edge. Mow down and back in parallel passes, overlapping slightly. Keep speed consistent and lines straight for clean contrast.

Tip: Striping shows best on cool-season grasses (fescue, rye, bluegrass) at 2.5–4". Warm-season grasses can stripe too, but results are more subtle.
