Mowing Safety Checklist

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Safety glasses or face shield
- ✓ Hearing protection (ear muffs/plugs)
- ✓ Closed-toe shoes/boots with traction
- ✓ Long pants; no loose clothing
- ✓ Gloves for blade/maintenance handling
Yard Prep
- ✓ Clear sticks, toys, rocks, pet waste
- ✓ Mark sprinkler heads & low spots
- ✓ Keep kids & pets indoors
- ✓ Check for bystanders/windows on discharge side
Mower Setup
- ✓ Set deck height for your grass (use the calculator)
- ✓ Sharp, balanced blade; secure blade bolt
- ✓ Verify guards/baffles/bag or mulch plug installed
- ✓ Fuel cap tight (gas) / battery seated (electric)
- ✓ Dry grass preferred; avoid wet slopes
Operation & Slopes
- ✓ Engage blade only on turf; never on pavement
- ✓ For push mowers: mow side-to-side across slopes (never up or down).
- ✓ For riding mowers: mow straight up and down slopes as recommended by your manual.
- ✓ Turn off engine & remove key/battery before clearing clogs
- ✓ Keep hands/feet clear of chute & deck at all times
