Best Mowing Height by Grass Type
Cutting your lawn at the right height makes the difference between patchy turf and a thick, healthy lawn. Use this guide to match mowing height to your grass species.
Cool-season grasses
Tall fescue: 2.5–4 inches. Taller cuts encourage deep roots and heat tolerance.
Kentucky bluegrass: 2–3.5 inches. Raise during summer to resist drought.
Perennial ryegrass: 2–3 inches. Best kept on the shorter side for density.
Fine fescues: 2.5–3.5 inches. Shade-tolerant; avoid cutting too low.
Warm-season grasses
Bermuda: 0.75–1.5 inches. Requires frequent mowing, thrives when short.
Zoysia: 1–2 inches. Handles heat well, benefits from sharp blades.
St. Augustine: 2.5–4 inches. Taller height protects wide blades from stress.
Centipede: 1.5–2.5 inches. Lower-maintenance, prefers moderate height.
Bahia/Buffalo: 2–3 inches. Rugged grasses that like mid-range heights.
