How to Fix Scalped Lawn Spots
Scalping happens when the mower deck is set too low or the ground is uneven, shaving grass down to the crown. These bare patches can recover—if you repair them quickly.
Step 1: Adjust mower height
First, prevent future scalping by raising the deck. Follow the 1/3 rule and avoid cutting grass below its recommended range. If spots occur on uneven areas, mark them and mow slower.
Step 2: Topdress low areas
Fill shallow dips with a thin layer of compost or sand-soil mix. This smooths the grade so the mower doesn’t shave crowns next pass.
Step 3: Overseed & water
Sprinkle matching grass seed over the scalped spot, rake lightly, and water daily until established. Keep traffic off until turf fills in.
Tip: Scalped areas are more prone to weeds. Overseeding quickly helps the grass outcompete invaders.
